How do I size a compactor for a multifamily building?
Size to unit count, waste stream, and pickup frequency. Under-sized compactors overflow and frustrate the operator. Over-sized compactors sit half-empty and cost more up front than they should. The three inputs:
- Unit count and occupancy. A rough starting point is one cubic yard of compactor capacity per 20 to 30 units per pickup interval, adjusted for the waste characteristics of the resident base.
- Waste stream. Buildings with heavy food waste or high organics generate denser and heavier waste than buildings that recycle aggressively. Get a scale reading on a full compactor cycle if possible.
